Renovating an 1800s house
An outdated closet and toilet room had been added to this dining room. We took both out so it's one room again, added a second bathroom, restored the original wood floors and repainted.
Original wood floors, exposed brick and old trim are often worth saving. Additions that made sense at one time, like a closet and toilet room built into a dining room, usually aren't.
We open up walls between separate, outdated rooms.
We refinish original hardwood and pine floors, and repair the framing under them when it needs it.
We put new treads, rails and balusters on worn stairs and paint the rest to match.
We find room for a second bathroom in an older house.
Some rooms have to come down to the original board walls before new framing, drywall and floors go in.
Old walls and trim take more patching and sanding than new ones. Before we start, we cover the floors and seal the windows.

We put oak treads on a worn staircase and painted the risers charcoal. It now has an oak rail and black balusters. Albert also joined two old cabinets into one three-door piece and painted it charcoal.
We stripped the back rooms of an older house down to their original board walls, framed new ceiling joists and a new wall, and moved on to drywall and a new subfloor.
